Media centres. Who needs them? The AT3705MGW is a 94cm (37-inch) LCD television with a built-in media gateway that can receive music, photo and video streaming directly from your Windows PC (2000 or XP).

Normally, you can buy a separate product for this purpose, but having it all integrated means one less remote to deal with and you're freeing up an AV input.

The Acer has an Ethernet port to connect to your PC directly or through a broadband router. You can also use Wireless-G to connect to a Wi-Fi-enabled router or computer wirelessly.

The TV is also endowed with two tuners: one analogue and the other digital. This means you don't need a separate set top box for picking up terrestrial digital TV signals, but while the screen is 1080i High Definition, the DTV tuner is only a regular 576p receiver so you don't realise its full resolution watching TV.

There's a multi-format memory card reader (CF, MS Pro, SD/MMS) located on the front for playing back pretty much the same kind of files you would stream from your PC. Setting up the media gateway portion of the TV requires a bit of computing and networking knowledge and isn't for the faint of heart.

It first requires the installation of an eConsole media server software on your PC, which feeds the digital files to the TV. Firewalls are an issue (Harrison Ford, do you take help desk requests?), and if you don't want to disable it, you'll need to learn about port forwarding quick smart.

The wireless only supports WEP security, though Acer recommends using MAC address filtering instead. If it all sounds a bit confusing you'd better find someone in the know before attempting any of it.

If you want to stream HD content, you'll need an Ethernet cable (100Mbps), as the Wireless-G bandwidth isn't enough for anything more than standard definition. DivX, XViD, WMV9 and Quicktime files are all supported as are the MPEG formats. It's tough to beat for value and there's a surfeit of inputs and outputs (I counted 12).

It turns out Acer’s Blue is a desktop replacement laptop with a bunch of entertainment-oriented features. It’s also not a “concept PC,” as the invitation to today’s press event suggested, but an actual product that will be available in about a month. The marketing department got a bit carried away, but there’s nothing wrong with the Aspire Gemstone Blue. In fact, it has several interesting features.

Aside from the blue color, the most distinctive feature is the display. The Aspire 6920G has a 16-inch display and the Aspire 8920G has an 18.4-inch display. Both are widescreen 16:9 displays with a full HD 1080p (1,920-by-1,080) resolution for viewing HD content from the internal Blu-ray drive or other sources. Though these aren’t the first notebooks to employ capacitive touch media controls, the design of the so-called CineDash Media Control is unique.

Both models have Intel Core 2 Duo (Penryn) processors, up to 4GB of memory, hard drives up to 320GB, and Nvidia GeForce 9500M GS graphics with 512MB memory. The 8920G can also be upgraded to the Nvidia GeForce 9650M GS, also with 512MB. The 6920G has 2.1 surround-sound speakers and the 8920G has 5.1 surround-sound speakers.

Even without exact specs for the starting configurations, the prices also look pretty compelling. Acer says they will range from $900 for basic models to $1,700 for well-equipped systems.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Acer America today announced a voluntary program for the replacement of certain notebook computer lithium-ion batteries containing Sony-made cells. The following Acer notebook computer models sold in the United States and Canada may have battery packs affected by this replacement program: TravelMate Series Beginning with:242x, 320x, 321x, 330x, 422x, 467x, 561x, C20x. Aspire Series Beginning with:556x, 560x, 567x, 930x, 941x, 980x. Acer said that the specific lithium-ion batteries could overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
